Plans have been submitted this week for the Harpur Centre in Bedford on behalf of Tellon Capital.
The proposals look to modernise the 200,000sqft shopping centre with a complete makeover. The Harpur Centre, which celebrates its 40th birthday this year, will be transformed with new double height entrances and new façade treatments on both Midland Road and Horne Lane. The proposals also look at the relationship between the shopping centre and the grade II* listed façade designed by Edward Blore for the Bedford Modern School before it became part of the shopping centre in the 1970’s. Glazed links are being proposed on both sides to create a light connection to the listed façade. The inclusion of a new small unit on Midland Road brings activity to the corner around the listed building, whilst not detracting from the existing Blore façade.
Alongside the external changes, interior improvements are being proposed with the spiral ramp being removed, making way for a new stair and glass elevator. The entrance from the basement car park and further general improvements to the interior finishes will help bring the centre up to date.
Overall, the proposals will contribute towards the regeneration of Bedford Town Centre, as well as improve the shopper’s experience.
