This scheme to transform the former Bargate Shopping Centre is set to open up and celebrate some of Southampton’s richest historical assets and will see an investment of nearly £100 million into the city.
The redundant 1980s shopping centre will be demolished and the site transformed into a vibrant quarter, offering new boutique shopping, cafes and restaurants. Plans also include both student accommodation and private apartments, along with routes through the site connecting the Bargate to Debenhams to create a lively neighbourhood in the heart of the city.
The historic town walls, which have been hidden for the past 30 years, will be a key feature of the new development and the historic Bargate will be celebrated once again as a gateway to the city. Pathways, kiosks and outdoor seating will line the wall, creating a journey through the development and encouraging local residents and visitors to enjoy this historic setting.
