The Operations and Maintenance building for the London Array Offshore Wind Farm is located in the Port of Ramsgate and has been designed by Corstorphine + Wright to achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.
The building will provide a control, operation and maintenance facility for the wind farm, which will be constructed in two phases, the first of which will consist of 175 turbines, generating up to 630MW of electricity. This is enough to meet the electricity needs of over 470,000 homes – two thirds of the properties in Kent.
The distinct architectural concept has been designed specifically around the exposed marine conditions and driven by positive sustainable measures, with the maintenance building and offices taking advantage of natural light and incorporating MMC, an extensive grass roof and CHP.
When fully operational, London Array will make a substantial contribution to the UK Government’s target of providing increasing levels of electricity supply from renewable sources and will avoid the emission of millions of tonnes of carbon dioxide over its life.
