Located to the south of Leicester city centre, Millgate School looks after the educational needs of pupils with social, emotional and behavioral difficulties (SEBD).
The redevelopment of the school has seen the roll increase from 54 to 75 students, with the form of the building carefully designed to respond to the restrictions of the site, access and strict requirements of the school for operational purposes.
A key driver in the redevelopment was the reduction of corridors and Corstorphine + Wright responded to this requirement by designing a central hub space from which the various elements of circulation radiate.
The new entrance ramp and steps provide a continuity of materials to the covered walkway linking the new block to the existing school and the accommodation has been arranged in order that it can be accessed from a shared entrance and reception area. This allows separate access and security for out of hours use of the sports hall.
