Our Head of Industrial & Logistics, Mike Teague, was recently invited by Logistics Matters to share his thoughts on the hotly debated issue of aesthetics of logistics buildings. The subject has recently drawn national attention, with headlines labelling warehouses as “monstrous” and “blights on the landscape.”
The article, I Feel Pretty…, explores the growing tension between the essential role logistics plays in the UK economy and the public perception of the buildings that power it. As Logistics Matters notes, warehouses are critical national infrastructure, supporting millions of jobs and billions in economic value and yet they are frequently judged solely on appearance.
Mike highlights that the sector is changing rapidly. With logistics developments increasingly positioned closer to homes and town centres, the industry can no longer rely on outdated, functional-only design approaches. Expectations around placemaking, sustainability, community impact and visual quality are on the up. And Mike agrees that they should be.
“Good design doesn’t have to cost more,” Mike explains. “Through intelligent masterplanning, we can deliver density and functionality while freeing up land for green spaces, enhancing biodiversity, and integrating developments more sensitively into their surroundings.”
