Porthcawl Medical Centre Porthcawl, South Wales
The new Medical Centre provides state of the art premises, amalgamating two local medical practices.
The development delivers a medical centre, pharmacy, car parking, landscaping and associated works at Pwll-y-waun Pond, Newton Nottage Road, Porthcawl.
From the outset, the key driver was to deliver a fit for purpose facility that accommodates the practice’s growing and future needs. Other drivers included improved security, disabled access, privacy and dignity areas, and improved staff working conditions that in turn increase morale, quality of service and staff retention. The addition of a new pharmacy allows for better integration of services, process and delivery.
The design of the building’s massing aims to reduce impact on local dwellings which surround the site on three sides. With a view to achieving this the massing steps down from three to two storeys nearest the houses on the opposite side of Clos y Mametz. In another effort to reduce the impact of the massing, a flat roof was proposed as any roof feature would only add to overall height.
It was important that all elevations provide an active frontage. There is a rhythmic language to the elevations which underpins the fenestration of the envelope. The fenestration was divided into sections which continuously repeat themselves around the façade. This ensured the building is viewed as one element rather than separate elevations where one may be more important than the other.
The materiality of the elevations were selected to complement the materials used in the local context. The addition of some feature coloured render ensures the building embodies its own aesthetic. The feature stone band around the base of the building helps to ‘ground’ the structure whilst further replicating some of the stone buildings found in and around Porthcawl.
The project completed in 2019 and provided a medical centre measuring over 2,000sq.m and an integrated 130sq.m Pharmacy.
