Corstorphine & Wright is pleased to announce that our most recent scheme with Assura has been granted planning approval by Blackburn with Darwen Council.

Griffin Lodge, Cavendish Place in Blackburn is a grade II-listed building, from the mid-19th century, that has been left derelict following several arson attacks. This project will see the restoration and regeneration of this historic building, giving it a new lease of life as a medical centre. Three surgeries, who are over capacity at their current locations, will operate out of the new medical centre. These practices are all currently based in redeveloped homes which weren’t designed for modern medical services and are in serious need of specialised premises.

The new medical centre will ‘enable the practices to lessen pressure on local hospitals by offering services for minor operations, clinics and support for mental health services.’ It will create over 21,000 sq. ft of enhanced clinical care space, including 21 consulting rooms, four treatment rooms, reception area and supporting workspaces such as a staff kitchen, offices, and a conference room. This will not only be a welcoming and safe place for patients and service users but also an attractive place for medical professionals to work.

This is proving to be an exciting and important scheme for the local Blackburn community. We are thrilled that it has received such positive feedback so far, with Dr Mark Dziobon, medical director for Blackburn with Darwen and NHS East Lancashire CCGs commenting that “For patients this is going to be a game changer.”

This project has been both exciting and challenging. To work with such an important local landmark building, and to bring it back to life is a real honour. The existing building will be respected with sympathetic detailing and treatment, whilst the extensions will be crisp and contemporary but will maintain the proportionality.

Director

Works will begin in May 2023 and the medical hub will be open to the public in July 2024.
