Corstorphine & Wright’s mixed-use scheme at Langham Road, Bowdon has been given the green light by Trafford Council’s planning committee.

The scheme with JV clients McGoff Group & Patrick Properties will consist of a care home, nursery, apartments, and 3- and 4-storey townhouses. Careful consideration has been made to complement the different facets of the sites. This is highlighted in how the care home and nursery buildings will be linked providing opportunities for intergenerational community events.

Located in the Bowdon conservation area, in the Greater Manchester region, the 1.7-acre development will take place on the site of the old Mercure Altrincham Bowdon Hotel. The hotel has been closed since March 2020. An 1871 Hydropathic Establishment, known as the ‘Hydro’ and a pair of semi-detached villas (Hawthorn Lea and Langham Lea) from 1873 currently stand on the site.

These buildings will be retained and repurposed and have inspired the design of the whole scheme. In addition to converting and extending the Hydro building to provide 95 childcare places, Hawthorn Lea and Langham Lea villas will be converted into the six apartments.

Our team has carefully considered the design of these retained buildings, extensively collaborating with heritage consultants, landscape architects and structural engineers to create a scheme that complements them through contemporary interpretation, and without overshadowing them.

Continued engagement with local schools has taken place to assess the needs of the Bowdon community and they have been extremely supportive of our proposals.

The Corstorphine & Wright team would like to extend our congratulations to the entire team involved. We look forward to seeing how the project develops.
