By Paul Turner – 18th November 2020

In a major new role for Corstorphine + Wright, Jonathan Tarbatt joins the practice as Director of Urban Design. Jonathan will be leading and growing Corstorphine + Wright’s presence and position in the field of urban design, with particular focus on large-scale masterplanning, regeneration and placemaking.

Jonathan is a qualified urban designer, architect and town planner as well as being an accomplished author. For over 25 years, he has worked in both the public and private sectors in the UK, Australia and Ireland. The depth and breadth of his experience and education in these three disciplines, together with his background in urban geography and sociology, has given him a multi-disciplinary perspective and a unique level of expertise in the built environment.

Having previously worked with Corstorphine & Wright on proposals for a large urban extension to the town of Braintree with Director Paul Turner, Paul knew Jonathan would be a valuable addition to the team to elevate the practice’s holistic approach to placemaking.

Paul commented: “We are in the business of supporting the development of new homes and neighbourhoods, and against the background of a burgeoning housing shortage in the UK, there are various issues to be reconciled – Jonathan will contribute to Corstorphine & Wright making liveable, robust and sustainable places to live, work and visit.”

Jonathan was a founding director of Loci in 2004, a highly successful urban design consultancy based in Dublin. On returning to the UK, he enjoyed a successful stint as associate at international urban design practice, JTP in London, before joining BDB Design as a Partner. He now joins Corstorphine & Wright from Star Masterplanning, Kent’s only dedicated masterplanning practice.

Speaking of his new appointment, Jonathan said: “I’m looking forward to helping Corstorphine & Wright demonstrate our commitment to in-house masterplanning. I believe sound masterplanning is the bedrock of good placemaking, and ultimately, of healthy and happy communities. I hope we can leave a legacy of great places that will stand the test of time for future generations to enjoy. There’s a huge wealth of skills, specialisms and experience covering many sectors across our studios nationally and part of my role as an urban designer will be to act as a ‘bridge’ between planning and architecture.”
