Taste Collective is a pop up retail and leisure space in the heart of Mell Square, Solihull.

Over the past 6 years Corstorphine & Wright has worked with IM Properties on a phased redevelopment of the 1960’s Mell Square in Solihull town centre. We were tasked to create an area with broader appeal to a range of ages and tastes, bringing greater vitality and vibrancy to the area and creating as many reasons as possible for people to visit the area be it to shop, eat, drink or socialise.

The projects we have undertaken so far in the area are, Drury Lane North, St Alphege Place, 45 Poplar Road and Mell Square itself. 

Working with IM, Corstorphine & Wright developed a brief to transform a vacant Costa coffee pavilion building in the centre of Mell Square, into smaller pop up units as well as creating a new external food and drink destination. The client aspiration was to design and market a vibrant street food and drink venue similar to the successful Digbeth Dining in Birmingham as well as a number of London schemes. A vision was formulated for the unit and surrounding area which gained interest from a local independent food and beverage business. Once they were on board the scheme was developed further using their experience and contacts to craft the design.

The final scheme refurbished the pavilion building to create a new café and cocktail bar, revitalising the surrounding public space with active frontages and outdoor spill out seating. The dilapidated public realm to the rear of the pavilion was transformed into new covered seating area, serviced by independent trader pop up units (many that also form part of Digbeth Dining Club).

The development has re-established Mell Square as the heart of Solihull, with new pop up retail and leisure space will become the connecting glue supporting our work at Poplar Road, Drury Lane and St. Alphege Place.

 

The scheme has increased dwell time and activity within the square to the benefit the surrounding businesses and town centre as a whole.
