Earlier this week, (EHDC) East Herts District Council gave our plans for Bircherley Green shopping centre the green light!
Working with developer Wrenbridge, our plans aim to rejuvenate the existing, tired 1980s Bircherley Green shopping centre in Hertford Town Centre as well as the multi storey carpark and the bus station.
The designs include new larger and more modern retail units as well as new restaurant units which will face the river. In addition, there will be a new 86 bed Premier Inn Hotel in the town centre and the creation of 70 new apartments.
The key strategic design objectives and aspirations of Hertford Town Centre Urban Design Strategy were at the heart of the scheme and include the following:
- Provision of flexible sized retail units with new frontages that enhance the shopping environment, and that will attract a greater variety of retailers
- Potential to accommodate a new Food Store within the town.
- Extensive improvements to the public realm surrounding the Shopping Centre, with a new focus towards the River Lea and opening up views of the river
- Restricting riverside access by motorised vehicles enabling safe pedestrian access
The redevelopment positively enhances the town centre and its connectivity with existing gateways whilst also creating a new link to the river.
Combined with a complete landscape makeover the approved plans provide an opportunity to regenerate the Riverside Quarter and to create a new and sustainable focal point for the town of Hertford.
