Matt graduated with a Distinction from Liverpool John Moores University’s School of Architecture and was nominated for the RIBA President’s Silver Medal. Whilst completing his studies, as part of a small academic team (Aire Design), he entered and won, the Allerton Bywater Millennium Community Competition, beating EDAW & Daniel Lebeskind. Matt subsequently set up practice as Aire Design in Liverpool to develop the competition winning scheme.
After working with Broadway Malyan as executive architects for Allentown Bywater he joined their Manchester studio in 2001. Matt was appointed to the main board as an equity director four years later in 2005. In 2005 Matt designed and secured planning consent for Mann Island in Liverpool; a site Historic England considered to be the most important undeveloped site in Western Europe. He subsequently went on to open Broadway Malyan’s design studio in 2007 and led the delivery of Mann Island, which received an RIBA Award in 2015 for design innovation and excellence. The project has been widely published in the UK in the RIBA Journal and in several international journals and periodical’s and has been cited by Historic England as an exemplar contemporary project and approach to designing within a heritage context. The success of Mann Island culminated in the building been selected to house the Royal Institute of British Architects new national gallery, RIBA North, which Matt also design and delivered and was opened in 2017.
Matt has also designed many other high profile and award winning schemes in the North West across a wide variety of sectors including Islington Wharf in Manchester and the widely acclaimed landmark food store for Waitrose in Chester. In 2019 Matt joined Corstorphine + Wright as Design Director with a national remit.
